TDSRC 2011 has ended at RWL

The TD Summer Reading Club 2011 has ended at the Region of Waterloo Library!

The TD Summer Reading Club has come to an end for 2011.  Thank you for making this summer’s reading club one of the best clubs yet! This summer, RWL had 1573 kids register in the club! Great work and thank you for a wonderful TDSRC!

Week 7

This week, Janine’s program theme is
Shipwrecked!

This week in Janine’s programs we will learn about famous shipwrecks, like the Titanic!  We will read Pig on the Titanic, make sailboats (pictured above), play Bingo, and distribute our prizes to our contest winners!

 

To make the sailboat at home you will need:

  • Cardstock
  • Stapler
  • Plastic Container Lid
  • Straw
  • Modelling Clay
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Decorations
  • Instructions:

  • Trace your hand to make the sail
  • Decorate the sail
  • Cut out the sail
  • Attach the sail to the straw with the stapler
  • Decorate the plastic lid
  • Attach straw to the inside of the plastic lid with modelling clay
  • Week 6

    This week, Janine’s program theme is
    Wild Wet Weather.

    This week in Janine’s programs we will learn about wild wet weather, like tsunamis and thunderstorms!  We will read The Magic School Bus Inside a Hurricane, make a wind sock (pictured above), and play What Would You Do?.

     

    To make the wind sock at home you will need:

  • 1/2 sheet construction paper
  • Tape
  • Stapler
  • Streamers
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Instructions:

  • Cut the construction paper in half
  • Decorate the construction paper
  • Join the ends of the construction paper and staple
  • Attach streamers with tape
  • Attach string with tape
  • Week 5

    This week, Janine’s program theme is Splish, Splish, Splash! Have fun and be Safe in the Water.

    This week in Janine’s programs we will learn about how to be safe in different kinds of water, including rivers, beaches and swimming pools.  We will also read Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach, make a fish (pictured above), and play Telephone.

     

    To make the fish at home you will need:

  • Unwanted CD or DVD
  • Tacky glue
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Glitter glue
  • Instructions:

  • Colour the fish
  • Cut out the fish
  • Use the tacky glue to glue the fish to the CD or DVD
  • Add glitter glue
  • Week 4

    This week, Janine’s program theme is O, Canada! Niagara Falls and the Great Lakes.

    This week in Janine’s programs we will learn about Canada’s water supply!  We will learn about Niagara Falls and the Great Lakes, play Splash Jeopardy, and make door hangers (pictured above).  We will also read books like Down the Drain!.

     

    To make the door hangers at home you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Pencil crayons
  • Decorations
  • Instructions:

  • Colour and decorate the door hanger
  • Cut out the door hanger
  • Week 3

    This week, Janine’s program theme is Arrgh, Mateys! Pirates and Treasure Seekers!

    This week in Janine’s programs we will learn about pirates, like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny!  We will make parrots and pirates hats (pictured above),
    and read books including A Pirates Guide to the First Grade.

     

    To make the parrot at home you will need:

  • Feathers
  • Scissors
  • Pencil crayons
  • Instructions:

  • Colour the parrot
  • Cut out the parrot
  • Glue on feathers
  • Bend on the dotted lines
  • Place on child’s shoulder
  • To make the pirate hat at home you will need:

  • Newspaper
  • Tape
  • Instructions:

  • Fold the newspaper in half
  • Fold down each side to make triangles
  • Fold one bottom flap up
  • Flip the hat over and fold the other bottom flap up
  • Tape edges
  • Week 2

    This week, Janine’s program theme is Splashy Fables and Fairy Tales!

    This week during Janine’s programs we will learn about and read fables and fairy tales.  We will also make the Frog Prince (pictured above), and play Statues!

     

    To make the Frog Prince at home you will need:

  • Green construction paper (1 sheet/child)
  • Red construction paper (cut into long rectangles – 1/child)
  • White paper (cut into small circles – 2/child)
  • Kleenex boxes
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Pencils
  • Instructions:

  • Draw two arms, and two long legs on the green construction paper
  • Trace two big circles on the white construction paper
  • Cut out arms and circles
  • Draw black circles (pupils) into white circles
  • Glue eyes on the top of the box
  • Fold legs in accordion style
  • Glue arms on the side of the box
  • Glue legs on the bottom of the box
  • Roll up red construction paper (tongue)
  • Glue tongue to mouth (slit of box)
  • Week 1

    The TD Summer Reading Club has begun at the Region of Waterloo Library!  

    This week, Janine’s program theme is What’s Under the Sea?.  We will read The Rainbow Fish, play Sleeping Sharks and make “pet” crabs (pictured above).  

     

    To make your own crab at home you will need:

  • paper plate
  • 24 straw pieces
  • hole punch
  • 9 pipe cleaners
  • markers 
  • Instructions:

  • Thread pipe-cleaners through the 8 side-holes and twist to secure
  • Put three pieces of straw on each of the pipe-cleaners
  • Bend legs to shape/make look like it is walking  
  • Put pipe-cleaner through the front-hole with ends sticking up and twist to secure
  • Add “claws” to front legs and twist to secure
  • Colour
